The PCYC was founded on Mother's Day, 1989, by a group of folks who gather each morning,
more or less, at the Little General Store in Midway, four miles west of Columbia, Mo.
Attendance at these regular meetings is not mandatory, but those who do show up have full
parliamentary powers to transact whatever business they deem appropriate, providing that an
officer or designee is presiding. A quorum consists of those in attendance.
With the stated purpose that "the highest purpose is to have no purpose," it should be
obvious that the club plans no long list of activities or programs other than to pay respect
to Perche Creek as Boone County's preeminent waterway, and to get together to enjoy, cajole
and cast aspersions upon mates and non-mates alike. Public figures are favorite targets, even
though most local officials are club members.
The PCYC preamble describes us as a facility for sharing the intelligence of carefully
selected individuals. Part of that selection process is whether or not the individual can answer
positively to two questions: "Do your have $20?" and "Will you give it to
us?" This one-time, eternal crew fee does entitle the mate to a Club cap, T-Shirt,
bumper sticker, membership card, membership certificate suitable for framing, and other
related documents -- plus the opportunity to participate, or not, in all Club functions.
A few times each year the Club comes perilously close to appearing to have a purpose.
There is the annual Cow Patty Bingo Game, with proceeds going to a local charity, usually
the Central Missouri Food Bank. If anyone feels like organizing it, there is an annual Flounders'
Day Golf Tournament, Sporting Clays and Barbecue, usually in June. The annual Landlubbers Regatta
takes place July 4 in sight of the fireworks display at Memorial Stadium. There also is an
annual Super Bowl party, the date depending on the NFL.
It is against Club policy to actively recruit members, but anyone interested may request an
application (go to crew page). Upon receipt and approval of
the application, a new crew kit will be dispatched pretty soon. If the application is declined,
the $20 will be returned. This has never happened.
